Mental is set in a psychiatric hospital, and Nolimit City have made no attempt
whatsoever to soften that. It arrived in August 2021, it is deliberately
unpleasant to look at, and it is one of the very few slots where the theme is a
reason some people will refuse to play it rather than a coat of paint over the
maths.
Set that aside for a moment, because underneath the presentation is one of
the most intricate slots the studio has built.
Five reels in a stepped 3-2-3-2-3 arrangement, giving 108 ways to win before
anything happens. Very little stays at 108. The grid expands as the features
fire, and by the end of a good spin it looks nothing like the one you started
with, which is not something most five reel slots can claim.
Every spin scatters Fire Frames across the reels, somewhere between one and
thirteen positions ringed in flame. Any symbol that lands inside a frame splits
into two. That alone changes the shape of the grid before a single special
symbol is involved.
Enhancer Cells sit beneath reels two and four and stay locked until those
reels carry enough Fire Frames to wake them. When one opens it reveals one of
the studio’s proprietary symbols, and this is where Mental stops being a normal
slot.
xWays reveals three identical symbols in the position it occupies, which
multiplies the ways available. xSplit splits one symbol on each reel into two
and turns itself into a pair of wilds, so it works twice: once on your ways
count and once on your wild count. The xNudge wild nudges until it is fully in
view and adds one to its multiplier for every step it moves.
The reason players talk about this game is that all three can be live at
once. An xSplit doubling a reel that an xWays has already stacked, with a
nudging wild carrying a multiplier through the middle of it, produces the kind
of result that looks like a bug the first time you see it. It is not a bug. It
is the game working as designed, roughly as often as designed, which is not
very often.
There are three bonus rounds and they are tiered. Scorpions on the odd reels
open Autopsy Spins, the entry level version, where the Fire Frames become
sticky. Adding a Spider symbol to the trigger upgrades you to Lobotomy Spins,
where the Spider sticks in place and the round builds around collecting Dead
Patients. Two Spiders take you to Mental Spins, the top tier.
The gap between the bottom rung and the top rung is enormous, and that is the
honest summary of the feature design. Autopsy Spins are a perfectly ordinary
free spins round that will frequently return less than you paid to get there.
The version everybody has seen clips of is the one almost nobody triggers.
Nolimit quote 96.08% as the standard configuration and, as with the rest of
their catalogue, lower versions exist for operators to select. The number
printed in the game’s own information screen at your casino is the only one that
means anything, so check it there rather than trusting any review, including
this one.
The maximum win is 66,666x your stake, chosen for the joke rather than for
your benefit. Volatility is rated at the ceiling of the scale, and the practical
translation is that the base game is an expense you accept in order to reach the
features.
If you have played Wanted Dead or a Wild you already understand the rhythm.
If your reference point is something like Tome of Madness, which is also
dark and also clever but pays with far more regularity, Mental will feel like a
different category of game rather than a harder version of the same one.
Mental is a genuine piece of design. The layered mechanics do something no
other studio was doing in 2021, the Enhancer Cells give every spin a reason to
watch reels two and four, and the tiered bonus structure gives the base game a
purpose beyond waiting.
It is also relentless, and the theme is going to put some people off before
the maths gets a chance to. Decide what the session is worth to you before you
open it, treat the figure on the screen as the only figure that counts, and read
our guide to playing real money slots if you want the longer version of
that argument.
