Most slots want you to have a nice time. Tombstone R.I.P. wants to establish, within about forty spins, that it does not care whether you stay. Nolimit City released it in 2022 as a sequel, and it is one of the least forgiving games ever put in front of a mainstream audience.
If you have played the original Tombstone, forget the pacing. This one is built on a completely different assumption about how often a slot should pay anything at all.
Nolimit call it xRIP, and it works like this: if a spin wins less than your stake, it pays nothing. Not a reduced amount. Nothing. The near miss is formally abolished.
Every other slot you have played fills the dead time with small wins that give back a fraction of your bet and feel like progress. Tombstone R.I.P. deletes that entire category of outcome and pushes the money it saves into the top of the paytable, where you will probably never see it.
The result is a hit rate under 10%. Nine spins in ten are a flat zero, and the tenth is not necessarily good either. You should know that before you open it rather than after.
xNudge wilds behave as they do elsewhere in the studio’s catalogue. They land stacked, nudge until fully visible, and gain a multiplier for each step they travel.
The xSplit wild is the interesting one. It only appears on the final reel, stands two symbols high, and cuts everything to its left in half. Splitting a symbol does not shrink it: you end up with two of it, on a grid that pays ways rather than lines, which is how a modest board suddenly becomes a large one.
A grid this cramped can double and redouble very quickly once splitting starts, and the arithmetic runs away from you in a way that is genuinely difficult to follow in real time. That is the appeal.
Three scatters award the Hang ’em High free spins, where the wild types feed a running multiplier. This is the bonus round you will actually see, and on its own it is a decent one.
Boothill is the other one. It needs the scatters plus a Boothill symbol, it is rare to the point of being theoretical, and it hands a random cowboy a multiplier between 5x and 999x on every spin. Everything written about this game online concerns Boothill. Almost nobody writing about it has triggered it.
If you want a slot bonus round you can reasonably expect to reach in an evening, this is not the game, and that is a design decision rather than bad luck.
The maximum win is 300,000 times your stake, which was headline news when it launched and is still absurd.
Read it as a warning label. A ceiling that high has to be paid for out of the ordinary spins, which is exactly what xRIP and the sub-10% hit rate are for. It is the same long tail that makes progressive jackpot slots feel so barren between events, except here there is no jackpot meter to watch.
Nolimit quote a shade over 96% as the standard configuration, with lower builds available to operators as usual. Check the information screen at your casino, because on a game this savage the difference between configurations is not academic.
Tombstone R.I.P. is a superb piece of design and a miserable way to spend £20. Both of those are true at once, and pretending otherwise does you no favours.
Play it if you understand that you are buying about twenty minutes of nothing in exchange for one moment that probably will not arrive. If you want the same dusty theme with a pulse in the base game, our review of Dead or Alive 2 covers the friendlier end of the western shelf, and it is a much better first stop if you are new to real money slots.
