Reel King Slot Review

We often advise our players to saddle up their time machine when we look at a new game. And it’s not for a trip to the future. No, the online video slots world loves nothing more than nostalgia and history. Often it’s ancient times, but in the case of Reel King slot, the trip is back just a few decades to the days when slot machines were played in bars and pubs.

This very classic five-reeler is themed on, well, slots! It’s a straightforward slot machine but does have some variation, including a gamble feature on wins, and a bonus game of a sort.

Reel King Slot Basics

Novomatic – branded as Green Tube – are behind this game, which operates on the standard five-by-three screen to put 15 symbols in your eye-line.

After a shockingly loud instrumental sting and an intro screen inviting you to choose from a screen-full of alternative machines, you open up to a classic fruit machine.

Game controls are at the bottom of the screen, with settings, sound and so on at the top right. All of the symbols are from familiar fruit machine games and the pay-table reads like this:

From a 1.0 bet: The plum and cherry both pay 10 for three symbols, 20 for four, and 40 for five. The 10 from the deck of cards pays 20, 40, and 60. The jack pays the same as the 10. Queens pay 40 for three, 60 for four, and 100 for a full house. Kings pay 60 for three, 100 for four, and 200 for five. The jackpot symbol – a bag of money – pays 100 for three, 200 for four and 500 for a full house.

Sevens pay during the Reel King slot feature at 30 for three multi-coloured symbols, 100 for three blue sevens, 200 for three yellow sevens, and 500 for three red sevens.

The wild symbol is the word “wild”.

Realistic sound effects

The Reel King slot game has realistic sound effects that mimic the sound of reels spinning and thunking into the end of their spin. A burbling digital tune of a sort accompanies the reels if you leave the music turned on.

There are 20 pay-lines that are lit up as you select them in the gambling options. You can bet from 0.02 per line to 5.00 per line. Make sure you check the actual coin values and bet values at the site where you’re playing the game.

The jackpot maximum is 500x stake, and the theoretical return to player is 94%, which is very low.

The Reel King slot game plays using HTML5 and should be available on all usual mobile platforms.

Reel King Slot Looks Good

The look and feel of the game are self-consciously backwards looking. It’s a nostalgic feel that a lot of players seem to enjoy these days. It’s understandable: in a world of ever more complex games, a machine that you just press and play is very tempting. Simpler games are also easier to play on smaller screens.

The symbols here are straight out of the classic design book – most are simply letters or numbers. They’re quite nicely done. The backdrop is also pretty simple: a blue fleur de Lys tiled across a blue background.

The bottom of the screen is filled with controls that again echo the real-world look of old-school slot machines with big square buttons. They run from left to right: autoplay, paytable (to open a single page paytable), the Bet line selector and window, the bet-per-line window and selector, then the total bet window, a gamble button, and to the far right a green, flashing start button.

Above these is a message window flanked by your credit balance to the left and the amount of the last win to the right. At the top right are a set of mini controls – that are actually pretty hard to see, even on a big screen – that turn the music and sound off and on and allow you to toggle in and out of full-screen mode.

You’ll have your own taste, but to our eyes, the sound and music were pretty awful on Reel King.

How to Play

One of the advantages of the classic style of a slot machine is that everyone knows how to play them. That’s the idea in any case, does it follow on Reel King?

We think though, it’s very easy to understand this game.

We’ve covered the controls above, and you’ll recognise them straight away.

Use the line button to select how many lines you want to bet on. This is a straight numerical scale up to 20. Then select your bet per line. Check values on the site you’re using, but our scale ran 0.02, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 80, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3, 4, 5, which gives us a maximum bet of 100.00.

Just click start to play and sit back and watch the reels spin. If you get a win you’ll be offered the chance to gamble in a double-or-quits game that’s a skill challenge to stop a flashing light – it’s very hard to the extent that it’s in-effect random.

The autoplay button is very simple. You just set it off and it turns into a stop button that allows you to turn it off.

The Reel King bonus game is totally random and gives you a reel full of sevens. The game continues until you stop winning.

The Developer of Reel King Slot

Greentube is a Novomatic Interactive brand. Novomatic is a massive company based in Europe that produces a massive number of slots, casino and other interactive gaming experiences for numerous casino companies.

Among their big titles are Almighty Reels, the Tales of Darkness series, Eye of the Dragon, Jaguar Moon and many more.

The Verdict

The standout figure in this game is 94% RTP. That’s really low. So bear that in mind when you play Reel King. It’s not a killer, but it’s a bit of a blow that otherwise follows the Novomatic blueprint of smooth but fairly simple gameplay – the machine looks pretty good and is easy to understand.

We found this game functional and fun, and when the bonuses trigger you’ll love it, but it’s not one of our all-time favourites. It’s one to check out and try, certainly, but not one to change your life.
